Life and residential living in the area between industry and the park were probably good. I do not have many memories, but notably no unpleasant ones. In 1970 my parents moved with me and my brother to the city, to a new building on Lenin Square. There we had another park, Friedrichhain Volkspark, with its hills made from the rubble left from bombing raids. But the view from the window was different: In the front we looked out at the twenty-metre-high, red-granite Lenin monument; in the back we looked out – while on the horizon a gas flare from the natural gas plant blazed in the sky – at the high-rise buildings of the East German secret police, whose children would be attending school with me.
