Wagner Music for Free

Producer Bernd Eichinger (Constantin Film) and the Hamburg fashion company Tom Tailor as the sponsor recently presented the music of Wagner to the people of Berlin free-of-charge. 1000 guests were able to experience the Staatsoper's production of Parsifal under the musical direction of Daniel Barenboim live and free-of-charge in the Palace of the Republic. Fast Forward Communication GmbH commissioned cine plus Media Project and avt plus with the audiovisual implementation of this unusual project. This involved lighting design, cameras, an OB van and a special laser route for the transmission of the signals. Much to the surprise of the audience, the ensemble was able to receive applause at both venues after the last curtain call thanks to the integrated delay of 30 minutes.

Eichinger wanted to reach as many people as possible with his production, and this was made possible by modern transmission and projection techniques. The recording was made using four cameras, and Bernd Eichinger mixed them live in the OB van. Using a Canobeam provided by Eurovision, the pictures were transmitted by laser into the Palace of the Republic. With a bandwidth of up to 270 Mbit/s the system can transmit up to six channels simultaneously. Earny Thiemann, head of cine plus News Service, commented: "We are especially pleased that we, together with Eurovision, are able to offer these special systems of which only a few are available in Europe."

A tandem projection with two Panasonic PT-D 9500 beamers was used in the Palace of the Republic. In this way, the picture was shown over a total width of 11m – in excellent quality. Two further projectors (Panasonic PT-D 7500) were also used. Among the numerous guests were Helmut Dietel, Alexandra Maria Lara, Richard and Marianne von Weizsäcker, and Hans-Dietrich and Barbara Genscher. "Apart from the technical challenge, it was important for us to take part in such a unique cultural event in Berlin. I believe the reaction of the audience spoke for itself," said Thomas Hofmann (cine plus Event Service) after the event.
