Triumphant launch of the cine plus Co-production DIE GROSSE STILLE (Into
Great Silence) by Philip Gröning
INTO GREAT SILENCE stormed straight to the top of the box office ratings
with 876 visitors per copy* on the very first weekend after its launch. After
its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and numerous exuberant reviews,
the general public is now showing its enthusiasm, too.
INTO GREAT SILENCE is a radical cinema event: no music, no interviews, no
commentary, no additional material. The film is a very severe, virtually silent
meditation on monastery life in its purest form. It describes a life determined
by a vow of silence and seclusion – and it tells the story of people who have
unequivocally devoted their lives to God. A journey into silence.
INTO GREAT SILENCE was shot predominantly using HDCAM. "We are particularly
pleased about the success of INTO GREAT SILENCE because the film is further
proof of the high quality of the innovative HDCAM technology. Besides the
picture quality, the special filming conditions in the monastery were the
decisive factor in the choice of this acquisition format," said Jörg Schulze,
executive producer at cine plus. Frank Evers, managing director of the cine plus
Group and co-producer added: "We would like to congratulate Philip Gröning on
this most extraordinary film. We are happy to have been involved in yet another
successful cinema documentary film after RHYTHM IS IT (BOOMTOWNMedia)".
INTO GREAT SILENCE is a production of Philip Gröning Filmproduktion in
co-production with Bavaria Film, Ventura Film SA, cine plus, Bayerischer
Rundfunk and ZDF in cooperation with Arte. It was sponsored by the Film
Foundation of North Rhine-Westphalia and the FFA and is distributed by X-Films.
